Dayton WordCamp

WordCamp1

Real Art’s Systems Admin, Brian Retterer is an active member of Dayton’s WordPress group and a co-organizer of their annual WordCamp Conferencean all-day event about all things WordPress. Here are a few of his highlights from WordCamp 2015.

The second annual Dayton WordCamp was a hit. This year, we had over 150 attendees with a wonderful lineup from the WordPress community. Our keynote speaker was the one and only John James Jacoby, the man behind Buddy Press and BBPress.

We again featured a host of great WordPress resources, like our Happiness Bar where you could go with questions for visiting Automatticians. Automattic, the company behind WordPress, is a very unique organization with employees all over the world, and some will come together to WordCamps to help answer questions. The Happiness Bar was incredibly popular this year and almost never empty. Also, for the first time, all of our visiting Automatticians got together for a Q&A session offered during the day.

The other sessions ranged from the very basic beginner 101 level (taught by myself and another of the co-orgnizers) all the way to developer sessions where you could learn about the core of WordPress.

However, the conference isn’t just about going and sitting in talks or classes. It’s a big social event for all areas of WordPress users. Throughout the day, attendees learn new things, meet with Automatticians, and just hang out. WordCamp is unlike every other conference I’ve been to; you’re actually encouraged to get up and leave any session that doesn’t feel valuable to you, and to go out and find one that does.

We look forward to organizing another great WordCamp for next year. Hope to see you there.
